River Spree, 1976

The Reichstag stands on the bank of the River Spree; it also stood next to the Berlin Wall during the Cold War years. During those days there were various attempts to escape the East by swimming across the river; unfortunately the escapees were shot by East German guards as they climbed out on the other side. Crosses were placed were they fell. See image P1015150 for the same view now in 2013; also P1015165.
